Old Camera Bags...(Good or Not?)

I recently purchased a 20D and 17-85/4.5-5.6 IS USM Lens and am looking to get more stuff. At the time the dealer advised me to get a new camera bag instead of using an old one. I have an older (15yr old) Lowepro bag which is quite a bit larger than the one I recently bought. When I bought the camera and bag he advised that the older bags are not really compatible (static resistant) and advised to get a new style. Can anyone tell me if this was a bunch of SH-- or can I still use the old bag.

Thanks

  My experience of camera shops is not to believe a single thing they say. They are either full of BS or don't have a clue. I have never been given decent advice from any camera shop, BUT there may be exceptions. Bags can be great buys SH.

I don't know why it would not be compatible if it is large enough? Does restraint refer to holding the gear in place or the pack securely on your back? The only reason I have heard for regularly purchasing newer bags is that the older ones get lots of dirt/dust in them that can work its way into your gear. A very thorough, rigorous vaccuuming out of your bag interior and all of the dividers will help with this, but you won't get everything. I often do this after long, dusty, sandy trips.
Camera bag manufactures will all tell you that the part that typically wears out in a camera bag is the zippers. This is especially true if you stuff your bag, the zippers will blow out first.

Static have not heard that before anytime or read anything in any forum and if it was true surely it would be something bag makers would be shouting about saying buy our new bags because etc etc. Does not sound credible to me ...

Not at all credible. If you have an old bag that you like, use it.

I still use one of the first Domke F-2 bags made, so it's well over 20 years old. The only issue with older compact bags will be the newer cameras having the molded-in grip that we never had to contend with in the Good Old Days. But if the gear fits, use it. If you want to worry about static, empty the bag periodically and spray the interior with Cling-Free.

If you camera was sensitive to static it would be damaged if you picked it up.
