I might have made a boo boo. I have a Canon 300mm F2.8 IS lens coming & have been looking for a Canon Extender 1x4. Been looking on Ebay & all of them had bids except for one that is a 1x4 extender II, they were asking $159.00 & I jumped on it. Now I've been reading that the II version doesn't work with a lot of lenses. Tried googling but couldn't find any compatibility chart to show which lens are compatible for the 1x4 II extender. Will it work okay with the Canon 300mm F2.8 lens?

Thanks, Hazel:confused:

I think that is the one that works with most of the lenses if I am correct.

I am pretty sure it will work. Good luck, and let's see some photos taken with that combination!

Make sure any other lenses you're considering are on the compatibility list, as no EF-S lenses work that I know of.

No problem with 300f2.8. It makes a very nice 420mmf4.

One of the parents at our football games uses that exact combo with great results.

I use the 300/2.8 IS with the extender II 1.4 all the time. No worries.

Now I've been reading that the II version doesn't work with a lot of lenses.

In case somebody else finds this on a search -

There is no difference in the fittings of the Mk I, Mk II and Mk III TCs. If one fits a particular lens then they'll all fit that lens.

Here is a link (external link) to the Canon lenses that all Canon TCs will work with. They also work with a few Off-brand lenses, but I've never seen that list.

When they say a Canon TC (not just specifically the 1.4XII - that is an excellent price by the way), they mean lenses that are not on that list. Canon TC extend out and do not allow for direct coupling with most lenses.

Off brands Canon compatible TCs (other than some Sigmas) can be mount on any EF mount (not EF-S) lens. (Yes, there are a few lenses that some of the Sigma TCs will not mount on because of the extension, but the extension is less than the extension on Canon TCs.)

So (most) off brands Canon mount TCs can fit 100% of the EF lenses, while Canon's TCs can fit only the 20 lenses in the linked list (plus a few, very few, others).

Thanks for Reading & Good Luck - Jim
