I know this forum is for EF/EF-S lenses but I wasn't sure where else to post. I'm looking to buy a 50mm f/1.4 Canon lens for my (soon-to-arrive) Canon A1 camera. I used to have a Canon 50mm f/1.8 bayonet mount lens and it was rather "plastic-y" though optically it was fine.

I'm wondering if the older breech lock lens had a better build quality compared to the bayonet mount version. By better build quality I mean more metal, less plastic; more solidly built.

Thank you.

Yes.
But most new FD prime lenses seems to me better than most non "L" Canon EF lenses in regards of build quality.

On a lens that old, they are all solidly built, except for a few third party lenses. I had a vivitar 28 that was mostly plastic but the canon lenses were all rock solid.

Sorry, but for me the New FD lenses were much better built than the old breech lock FD lenses with the silver ring for attachment. I've never had a New FD lens give me problems, but two of my breech lock lenses have loose fittings. Sold both of them and replaced each with New FD versions (24mm f/2.8 and 35mm f/2).

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

ymmv: some older FD primes have superior optics to nFD. my 40yr old chrome nose fifty is razor sharp wide open, gives great bokeh and screws on with no rattle.

I preferred the breech mount over the bayonet stye. The only negative was that it was a bit slower in switching out the lenses.

Build-wise, I doubt you will find any problems with either.

UPDATE
I’ve decided to purchase the bayonet version. Based on the various replies, I concluded that I couldn’t go wrong either way. My decision was based on aesthetics (black lens on black body), smaller size (52mm thread) and weight. Thanks to all for your valuable input and experience.
