Is your camera set to take a RAW image along with the JPEG? It might be that the software you are using to look at the files does not recongize the RAW image (from my 20D the raw image has the name "filename.CR2") and you have to use a program that can recongize and display the RAW format.

Good luck,

Dennis

Yes, apparently it is set to take both. It seems the advanced settings allow RAW images and then the other settings are taking JPEGS. I have PS6. I have another program that I'll go check to see if I can find them anywhere! Ugh, frustrating. I hear RAW is the way to go but don't really want to deal w/ all this.

ok-so once it's converted does that mean it's no longer RAW? I guess I'm not really understanding this too well. Do I have to leave it on my memory stick to keep it RAW? This is frustrating me because had I not know RAW was so great (from what I'm reading on here) I would have been fine w/ Jpegs. lol

Have a look at Rawshooter Premium 2006. It is inexpensive and gives a very simple and effective workflow to RAW PP. Now's the time to start using it rather than learning via another application and then, perhaps, discovering RSP is the right route after all. I just don't use PS CS any more.

For starters, how are you downloading from you memory card, and to what software?

I had tried to download from my camera using the DPP software and it did not downlaod my RAW files. I went into the card and copied them, that worked but what a pain!!! I bought a card reader and all works WAY better, faster downloads with no probs.

The first while with my dSLR I shot JPEG not really understanding RAW, then I did both, but once I figured out and realized the flexibility of RAW, I have shot nothing else since. It does take more PP work but the potential for the images does totaly outshines anything you can get from PP work with JPEG.

Hope this helps lead you in the right direction, there are many better phot guru type folk on here who might better help you.

I personally think RAW is the way to go, but it is not something that you can accomplish without working at it. Here's a link to some information on RAW files and processing. (external link) There are many more that can give you an idea of what it's all about. I wouldn't make a decision to go with RAW without getting a better understanding of it.

I too, from what little experience and knowledge I have, think Raw is the way to go. I don't think PS 6 will really see your Camera's raw images. I think that was a feature introduced with Photoshop CS and CS2. I could be wrong, I'm not really familiar with Photoshop.

Anyways, for some reasonable explanation of raw (in general, and vs jpeg), try this pdf file from the Adobe website (I thought it was very well written):

you might find this interesting as well:

As for getting raw off the camera, why not consider Pixmantec's Rawshooter Essentials? It works, isn't too bad UI (User Interface) wise, and is free, more information here:

Hope this helps,

Dave
