Went back to Burlington Falls today and took some of the brook in the snow. I'm a little disappointed in the way the came out, lighting was difficult to say the least. Just not used to having bright sun and snow.  Had to trudge through about 2 feet of snow to get down to the brook.

Thanks! when I got home I noticed that I had my EV set at +1 and I had metered on a darker portion of the scene to begin with. Good thing I shot in RAW because these were way dark. Did the best I could to fix them.

Hi Sandy

I see that finaly you got your semi-annual blue sky :D, but ofcours as you said above it comes with bright sun and snow.:(
Not a very good combo is it ?

Somehow though you managed to come up with excelent (to say the least) photos.;)
I suppose you`ve got a few more from that outing?
Looking forward.:)

Still, it came out beautifully, Sandy. Isn't PP a wonderful thing?

I am headed up the mountain later today to get some photos for my class assignment and hope I see a bit of snow myself.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

I understood that having EV set to +1 was the suggested way for taking snowy scenes because the scene under-exposed otherwise?

Having recently struggled to walk through just 4in of snow, I understand how difficult it is to walk through snow but your results were very worthwhile.

Looks like the dynamic range was just too great for the camera, but you handled it well and the result is a good compromise between shadows and blown highlights. It is a nice scene, too. We have started our trip to AZ and UT in search of snow on the red rocks, so wish us well.

That would be true if you were averaging your metering over a lot of snow, I tend to have my meter set at partial, or center weighted usually partial, and I tend to meter on the shadow area. Had I metered more in the snow it would have been fine. Shooting in RAW saves the day on mess ups like this. I would rather keep my EV at 0 and meter in different areas, lots depends on the DOF and if you're metering near your focus point. Worst part about the snow was when I stepped on the snowplow bank near the road thinking it had some pack to it I sank over my knee, had a tough time getting my foot out. The only thing I worried about was dropping the camera.

Thanks Maureen, hope you get to see some snow. :)

Thanks Stan. you may be right, I know it was pretty dark in there, mostly evergreen trees, with very bright streams of sun light coming through, I was metering on the dark rocks at the falls, and with the EV set at +1 bah.

thanks Balliolman not sure how good it was but thanks to PP I could save it.

I'm not sure how I missed this one, Sandy, but I'm glad Marie popped it back up to the top so I got to see it. Lovely shots!

Thank you so much Marie and Becca. The snow is going fast around here it's been in the 40's and 50's all week, and we're getting a ton of rain on Sat. Strange winter.

Despite all the talk about how this shot was messed up I don't see it. It is very well done and exposed. These shots with this type of lighting is my nightmare. You have done a great job with it. Nice Sandy.
