Im rather new to the world of lenses and slr's and what not, happily chugging along on wee point and shoots for ages :-) Ive been using my trust 350d for a while now and am about to embark on my first proper lens purchase the tonika super wide machine...

..its just scarey spending so much on a lens when you think you could get a holiday out of it! but if its somthing you use everyday......

just stalling realy before i press the 'buy' button, i can afford it and everything, but still...a holiday...hmmmmmm

:-)

Feel the fear, then do it anyway. The doubt is only there to make sure you know what you are doing. I am sure you do.

RiverCottage, one life to live one death to die. We have no clue what and when is going to happen with the latter one, so we may as well enjoy the life. Go ahead, click the damn button!

I felt that way prior to taking the plunge but once the button was pressed the feeling was instantly replaced with anticipation. Your ok if you click once. Just don't double click!

You will love it. Since I purchased my Tokina 12-24, it lives on my camera about 65% of the time. I really love wide angle, and the Tokina does it very well, so you will not regret your purchase. I used to balk at lenses over $200 at first as well, but now, the right tools give you the freedom to express yourself better, which is all you can ask for, so the money is well worth it.

Good luck with the lens. As far as buying expensive lenses, it might seem like a lot of money but it only gets easier after the first one...sometimes alittle too easy. ;)

When you think about spending money on a lens in relation to other items you buy it is a bargain. How many other things will you get this much use out of, enjoy so much, and do it for so many years?

Assuming you got the 12-24mm f4? Very nice lens indeed. For the same price I doubt you'd have much of a holiday so probably a great purchase for when you can really splash out and go somewhere worth the effort.
