Quality concerns about aftermarket lens collars

I am in the market for a lens collar for my 70-200 F/4L IS lens (attached to a 50D). Have read lots of reviews on the different aftermarket lens collars (Canon is way too expensive) and the main complaint is that the collar is made of plastic. Many plastics are very strong and would work as well as metal.

My question is: Has anyone had an experience where the plastic collar has broken? Is the plastic material issue something to be concerned about?

What seems to be the best one out there?

The non-Canon collars are made of alloy , not plastic !
Well the ones I looked at on the net were .
I am not going to post a link of a non Canon collar as I don't have one .

At the end of the day , do research and make your own choice .
I went Canon , yes expensive ,I know .

I purchased (from B&H) a VELLO lens collar for my 70-200
It is not plastic but rather some kind of metal alloy.
It is excellent and I have no complaints.

I also read quite a few negative reviews of aftermarket collars, largely that they don't fit well and/or mar up the lens. Went with the Canon despite the ridiculous amount of money they cost.

While I tend to agree with this statement, I've had a 3rd party Type 1 for 5 years and it works great. If I'm not mistaking, the type 1 is how the canon mount was originally designed. I think a lot has to do with luck. Mine works and fits great, but there are a lot of type 1's that don't. Same can be said of the type 3+, the quality control isn't there and some can be worse than a good type 1.

I have a couple of the 3 party collars ( alloy ones ) no problems what so ever

you can check keh, BH and adorama for a used OEM tripod ring. still not cheap but cheaper. i've had a couple aftermarket tripod rings for this lens. one was crap and the other was okay.

BTW, i have al L bracket on my camera so i don't use a tripod ring anymore. i really don't feel the 70-200L f4 IS needs it.

Non Canon collars can come in plastic or metal. I prefer the metal ones. Overall quality doesn't touch the OEM collars. But what do you expect for 1/10 the price?

It is one of the more expensive made in China models (~20$ shipped), but from my research it is the best quality - as far as I understand, one-to-one copy of the Canon's. I haven't used it much yet, but initial impressions are good - heavy, sturdy (definitely quality metal), lock and bolt work well, quality lining, lens doesn't move when bolt screwed in, can easily rotate if loosened.
