Saw this today. Never saw this before. I wonder if this was two small fronts merging together. But this line was the length of the whole sky wherever there were clouds. And it was almost perfectly straight.

All of you weather bugs out there can answer this one... Am I correct in my two front assumption?

That's what I thought at first too but it didn't appear to be below or above the clouds. It sort of looked like the clouds were mixing together. Either that or the plane flew through the clouds the whole way.

Contrail from an airplane (no such thing as a chem trial unless you're a conspiracy theorist). The contrail is above the clouds and what you are seeing is the shadow of the contrail on the clouds.

Yep. Jet trail. I have seen the same thing a couple of times. I jet is flying over the lower clouds and the shadow from its contrail is being cast onto the lower clouds.

Hmmm. OK, Makes sense I guess. I've never seen it before though. I guess because I used to live so close to the airport in Chicago for most of my life I never had the opportunity to see this ever. Now I live about 60 miles from an airport so it probably happens more frequently and this is the first time I noticed it. :)

I second this. I see it quite a bit, too. Even on a clear sky, and depending on the angle of the sun, its possible to see a shadow if you look.

If you notice, the sun is practically right over the line. So that's probably why it looked so dark.

Also, those clouds look to be Altocumulus clouds and very high up so that the shadow does not get too large and diffuse.
