I had been curious if my Sigmonster can extract more lunar detail by using stacked 2x and 1.4 TCs and shooting RAW vs. my previous best JPEG moon shot with a 2x TC.

Here's a 120% crop from one of my best JPEG shots, Sigmonster + Sigma 2x, 1600 mm

And here's a 100% crop from last night with stacked Sigma 2x and 1.4x TCs, 2263 mm

Last night's full frame resized to 50%:

It looks like the combination of shooting RAW and an additional 1.414x magnification squeezed out a bit more detail. But with the way the 100% crop looks, I'm guessing that stacked 2x and 1.4x is just about the limit that the Sigmonster can handle.

Comments will be appreciated.

Regards,

Romy

Hey, did you notice those two guys stealing the wheels off the lunar rover?

Very nice - That is really a huge image, and you've captured a great deal of detail.
Oddly, your 50% image is a bit larger than my 100% image. :)

How come we aren't getting any comments from those people who say the 50-500 is too soft compared to the 100-400 IS L Canon?

Excellent shots Romy! These are wonderful, despite the air quality and extraneous urban light in Paranaque.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Tom W, your moonshot is excellent, though this is one application where the 5D's FF sensor size is not working for it....:D

BB, I had to take this pic last night through breaks in the cloud, as it has been cloudy in Manila since mid-November. The skies look clearer this afternoon and if it holds, I'll take more shots tonight.

Maybe because the lens in use was not a 50-500... ;)

If in doubt, I shut up...

Gear: 40D, 12-24mm AT-X Pro, 17-85mm, Sigma 150mm Macro Sigma 100-300 F4, 550EX, other stuff that probably helps me on my way.
