The Nikon P7100.. and i absolutly love it.
I been searching for a small compact advanced camera for a few weeks, compared and read most reviews on the best compacts out there.
Two things made me pick the 7100: the look and the optical viewfinder.
I been looking at Canons G12, Leicas d-lux 6, Panasonics luminix 5, P7700 and a few others.
All of the above was a bit pricey for me.. i started reading all reviews i could find about this little fella, and everything from dpreview to ephotozine and photography blog gave it 4/5 or close to 90%. Ofcourse i had to take into consideration that this was back in jan/feb of 2011. So the specs compared with todays cameras are so so..
Then i saw that my local store had it listed for $525/£325 so i went over there and tried it out for 30-40 minutes, went home and started looking for price comparison and saw that this store hadent lowered the price.. most stores had it for $371/£230.
I wen there today and told them that they overcharged the p7100.. the clerk said i could get it for the same price and since i buy alot of stuff there i could get a bit cheaper than that.
So i got it for $340/£210
Anyway.. it's no 60D, thats for sure.. but it got most (if not all) settings you get on a DSLR. It has three customizable wheels, one feel dedicated for EV +/-, PASM and three user settings and on top of that it got a dedicated wheel for ISO, WB, bracketing and a few other settings.
It's a CCD sensor so no awesome high iso/dim light photos, everything above iso 800 is useless if you ask me. The good thing is that the sensore are larger than in other compacts (1/1,7") so the IQ are still very good.
Bursts are slow, it takes 5-7 seconds to save a RAW file, Jpegs are around 2 secs.
It has some outstanding features and controls for a compact (it's listed as an advanced compact) with everything from effects to custom buttons and menues.
The optical viewfinder covers around 82% and although most reviewers (and especially Kai) dispise it.. i actually like it alot.
The feel of the camera is great, metal with good rubbergrip. The angle-screen works great even though it can not be turned out on the side.
I don't know why, but together with the brown leatherstrap (i had one laying around, does not come with the camera) i get a vintage/retro look while carrying it around. It's no Leica or X100.. but it still feels a bit like it
There is one thing i wish this camera could have.. and it's a fixed lense, 35mm would have been awesome. Digital zoom.. nah, not for me.
This camera is for the careful/detailed photographer that takes his time to frame a picture.
Here are some quotes from other reviewers:
"It's the kind of camera that you may need to spend a little time getting to grips with, and perhaps even a couple of hours in the manual reading how to get the best from it. Images straight from the camera look great, with bright colours, good detail and good performance at both wide and telephoto settings, with low noise."
"Nikon's design team have taken advantage of the P7100's larger footprint to implement a winning combination of dials and wheels, with the second Function button and the rotary command dial in particular boosting the P7100's intuitiveness even further. There are so many ways of customising the camera to your own way of working that make the P7100 a photographer's dream from a handling point of view."
Anyway, that's my impression/ "review" of the back-up camera.
