Manfrotto 324RC2 + 3020 Legs = ?????

How will a Manfrotto 324RC2 head work with 3020 legs for long exposures? Right now I have a 3047 head that is cumbersome and weighs in just over 3 lbs.

Better recommendation for a RC2 head that's fast, inexpensive, light and trustworthy?

Good RC2 head? 498RC2, which you'll be able to upgrade later to an Arca-Swiss clamp. Or just get an Arca-Swiss style head right from the word go. The 324 and related heads are a solution looking for a problem. A straight ball head's much faster to use. If you really want the 324, get a grip strengthener - you'll need it if you use that head much.

Thanks Jon. Coincidence I guess, the 498RC2 head was the one I was originally looking at and then thought a pistol grip might be nice. The price is more attractive too.

As far as the Arca-Swiss style, I'm confused. Isn't that and the RC2 one and the same? If not can you point me to an Arca-Swiss style head?

Lastly, will I need a thread adapter for my current legs?

No, the RC2 plate is a Manfrotto proprietary design. Arca-Swiss style platesd are made by many companies at a wide range of price points. For instance, there's this from Adorama, or this from the Rolls Royce of support gear, Really Right Stuff.

That's what I did with my 488RC2.

Went smooth as silk. But I've moved to a RRS BH-55 as my primary ballhead. The 488/LR2 is my #2, while a Markins/LR2 is #3.
