Hi, I have read about a software called Superduper for Apple computers, which from my understanding clones your entire HDD as a back up, and if your HDD crashes, you can basically just pop the back up into your computer and boot from that, and be up and running in minutes without loosing a beat.

And I correct on this??

I am using Windows 7, does anyone know of a software similiar to this, that does basicallly the same thing? I am very interested in having something like this.

I appreciate everyones help, and thank you in advance

Sure, there are probably 100 different hard drive imaging products out there. One of my favorite is Macrium Reflect, which has a free version for home use. The best part about it is that you can clone your C: drive while the computer is running! In the past, you had to boot off of a CD outside of windows to clone the C: Drive.

Anyway, there are lots of options. Norton Ghost, Acronis, GT partedit, Macrium Refelt... Google search for more if you want.

You can clone to a spare drive that is ready to go if you want, but for ease of use I use image files on a USB hard drive. So if my drive died, I'd buy a new drive and restore from my image file to the new disk.

Your HD manufacturer should have the software available on their website for free. The maxtor one was the easiest for me, but its been a while since I've had to do it.

I've done desktop/server support and been building PCs for 15 years and I never once thought to check if I got free image utilities with my disks! Both Seagate and WD (who now own everyone else) offer Acronis based utilities for free. Thanks for the tip! :)

I still like that Reflect product because I can clone while I am using the computer.

I use Acronis True Image and it can be used to clone your HD or backup certain folders to completely wipe drives with random 1 and 0 with multiple passes.
For $40, its well worth it.

Thanks for the responses everyone, much appreciated.

I of course did google this before posting, and was sooooooo many out there in the search results.

I wanted to see what everyone thought was the best, or just what most people are using.

Does the Acronis back up my C drive while I am using it? or does only Macium do that?

While youre using it? I dont know of any that do that. You usually have to use the program to create a boot CD/disk and then boot to that then their program gives you options to back up the image file where ever you want.

Macrium Reflect does, as I mentioned it above. I used it to clone my system disk to a new replacement hard drive while I was browsing POTN! :)

I wouldn't want to be changing a lot of data while it is running, however, not sure at one point the Shadow Copy snapshots are made or what changes they would included. I would assume it's point-in-time based on when you start the operation.
