It's basically a larger foldable softbox for the speedlite. I've been debating whether to get one or not. It looks a lot more portable then the alienbees and their softbox. Has anybody tried these yet? Yay or Nah?

It is only 10" x14". It is not even an apple to oranges comparison with a studio strobe softbox. I would say that it would be more portable than an Alien Bee box.
What do you plan to do with it? It says for on camera work. I cannot imagine this thing not blocking the camera lens. It is sure to block the flash sensors.
Maybe for off camera work if your subjects are bugs.

Too small for anything but closeup work. I'm not sure why you would even be comparing it to an alien bee softbox for instance because they are different creatures.

Just something I was considering. I would be using this as a off camera lighting. Please explain to me how they are different from studio strobe modifiers?

Mounting systems namely. The lumiquest is meant to velcro on a speedlight and the others require a mounting speedring and if wanted to use a speedlite you would also need a custom bracket of some sort. Each brand of studio strobe has its own (or shared) mounting system. In the case of alien bees its the balcar mount. So to use an alien bee softbox you would need an adapter and bracket to mount a speedlite. Its probably easier to get a dedicated speedlite softbox to begin with as they usually come with a bracket as part of the package. Look at the westcott, cheetah box, and for the best bang for the buck look at the softlighter. Google or BH should get you descriptions.

I got something like this for free when I bought my fotodiox 48" octabox. That free box is 8"x10" and light wise it can't compare to a basic 45" shoot through umbrella. For the $45 that the 10"x14" costs, You could get a 45" Westcott shoot umbrella and an Impact umbrella bracket.

Either way you will need a light stand. My 8"X10" will just fit on the hotshoe with my 580EX2 mounted and still not block the lens. With a smaller 430ex2, it gets scrunched up. So I can only deduce that a 10"14" would be too big for on camera use with even a 580EX2.

Here it is. I wouldn't own it if it weren't free with a package deal.

The fotodiox looks a lot nicer compare to the lumiquest. Doesn't seem to allow any light to leak compare to the lumiquest. Plus it's also much cheaper. I don't have any thoughts of running this on top of my camera. 90% of my photos are off camera flash only.

That's funny. I have never seen the Lumiquest in person but I was going to say it looked nicer to me. One complaint I have about the fotodiox one is that the sides are pretty flimsy and it doesnt maintain a nice rectangular shape when attached to the speed light. The Lumiquest looks like it has more ridged sides that would help eliminate that problem. At least that is how it looks to me.

I don't have problems with light leaking out the back though.

strobist.com has a nice writeup on the LTP... great for close-up work like stated above... I chose to purchase one just because it folds flat and stores easily in my camera bag's laptop compartment.. (just like i was designed for) :)
I find it great for product shots and other table top stuff...

the LTP is directly on top of the hat.. inches away....

the LTP is the background..

its a great tool and it takes up very little space in my bag....

I have G.A.S.

Soft lighting comes from a light source that is much larger than the subject. It is somewhat soft on these small objects. Not so much if you tried this with people shots.

This one is excellent. Best one I have ever used. I just can't figure out why all my images have the word Opteka in them.

Its actually a very useful tool. David Hobby(Strobist.com) loves the softbox III and Joe McNalley uses the LTP quite a bit. They did cool things with them on their flashbus tour. I picked up both of them and keep them in my bag. They come in handy at times.
