I recently shot the band Marduk on their 'Serpent Sermon' Australian tour. One of the support band's record label contacted me last night;

"William,

Saw some of the Portal photos you took from their recent show. Really sick stuff. I would like to have some of these at high res to help promote their upcoming new album.

Let me know what you'd like to work out compensation wise, for a number of these Portal shots that I can hopefully/possibly use. Always good to have a decent amount at my disposal.

Hope to hear from you soon,
thanks again
"

I've charged for photo shoots for local bands in the past but still don't really have an idea of what I should be charging. More specifically, what I should charge the record label for the photos. Going by his statement "Always good to have a decent amount at my disposal" I am assuming he wants something like twenty photos, so I was thinking that I should charge per photo, inform him of the total and negotiate from there. I certainly don't want to present him with an outrageous/unreasonable figure that makes him rethink the entire deal, but I don't want to undersell myself (again).

I know there will be threads on this sort of thing in the past but I kind of need to get back to him as it has already been a day since he emailed me, and I don't want to leave him hanging.

Can anyone help me out, please?

I would start with an offer of $50 AUD per photo for non-exclusive digital/print promotion rights for 5 years(excluding product/merchandise use), or $250 for the entire collection. I probably would not settle for anything less than $30/$175.

Seems a bit cheap, but its a good starting point. Either price per photo or for the whole selection.

I would focus more on charging per use than charging per image.
You just want to make sure that you aren't charging a rate that may be appropriate for one time use on a promotional, temporary web page that's advertising one of their show dates, then have the image be used on a CD cover or billboard, for that same rate.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
