Thanjavur is dominated by Brihadeshwarar Temple, otherwise known as the 'Big Temple', an 11th-century edifice dedicated to Shiva. It is notable among South Indian temples in that the dominant structure is the spire in the inner sanctum, rather than the gates (gopura), as is the case in other major temples in the area.
