Im looking for a few more CF cards, I quite like using 8GB, could stretch to 16GB
what brands other than SandDisk and Lexar are any good?

if you check the link above, these are about the best prices I can get in New Zealand

Im using a 7d and I do use burst and 1080p video so I wan't a pretty fast card

the typical rule is that Sandisk and Lexar are the best, while others slowly drift down.

personally I only use sandisk. why? because they have never failed me and why screw up a good thing? I would not be against using lexar but its just a personal choice

you will need a UDMA card I believe over 45MB/S

I use the Sandisk Extreme that is 60mBS
there is also an extreme pro that is 90MBS

while lexar uses a different number system its essentially the same thing

there 60MB is a 600X
there 90 is a 900X and they even have a 1000X

others will chime in with their personal opinions but the general consensus is that Lexar and sandisk are the cream of the crop

Video doesn't need a fast card. 8 MB/s will do (you probably can't even buy a card that slow nowadays). For burst, the card speed only makes a difference to how fast the buffer is cleared which only matters if you're going to be shooting more than 25 raw files (or hundreds of jpegs) in a burst.

I use a couple of 60 MB/s cards and find no need for anything faster. Especially not at silly 1000x prices.

Actually, 600x is 90 MB/s and 1000x is 150 MB/s.

Really? I was so wrong. Thank you! I might be more inclined on picking up a few Lexar...

+1 for Transcend, especially the 400x version. Regularly priced at $39.95 for 32gb at B&H.

The only CF card I've had fail is a Sandisk Extreme IV 8gb which lost 7gb of its capacity. Sandisk said fake, but bought at authorized retailer complete with hologram on sealed package and rescue disk inside.

Bought couple of Maxell 400x 16gb at B&H 6 months ago at a great price and they have performed flawlessly. Seriously can't tell any difference between the Sandisks, Lexars, Transcends and Maxells that I own.

For photography equipment I only use Sandisk. But I have used Transcend and Lexar for other stuff and so far havent had any issues.

That's because there is very little difference between brands when it comes to CF cards. I've never had any problems with Sandisk or Lexar. Or Transcend. Or PNY. Or Nikon. Or Canon. Or Kingston. Or half a dozen others. Indeed, I've never had a card fail in over a dozen years.

I started using Sandisk with my Canon G-3 about 10 years ago, when I got back into photography. Since then, I've had 4 digital cameras each with multiple Sandisk memory cards. I've bought a least a dozen or more Sandisk memory cards. Never had any failures.

I also use only Sandisk for USB thumb drives for computer storage, including temporary 'offsite' storage (my pocket) for pictures 'in process'. I think I've bought at least a dozen or more Sandisk thumb drives through the years as well. Never had the slightest hiccup on any of them. They just keep getting too small for some strange reason...or is it going from a 3mp camera to a 23mp camera shooting RAW+JPG sucks up a LOT more memory?

Bottom line, how would saving a couple of dollars on a memory card today soften the blow from losing critical pictures at the most inopportune time.

Here are some test results that might help you decide:

Edit: But if transfer speed is not a factor, your short list looks good.

Just to put these tables into some sort of perspective.

The 7D (with new firmware) can shoot around 25 raw images before the buffer fills, taking 3s to do so. That's around 625 MB of data. The fastest card in Rob's table (Lexar Pro 1000x) will take 10.9 seconds to write 625 MB. The 24th card in the list (Sandisk Extreme when sorted by raw speed) will take a massive 15.6 seconds to clear the buffer.

Q. Is it worth paying almost double (£125 vs £65) to save 4.7 seconds on those rare occasions where you actually blam away for 3 seconds and fill the buffer?

This is what I use, and I love them! They work great on my 5D II with video.

I've always been a Kingston person, since my days of using class 4 cards. The SanDisks would break like crazy, and I'd have to scotch tape the lock tabs. Kingston's were cheaper, and they were tougher than SanDisks. I think I probably had 4-6 Sandisks break, to one Kingston, and the Kingston's took much more abuse.

I'm sure the higher end SanDisk cards are okay, but I still kinda don't trust them, and for that price, I can get a ton more storage from Kingston. When another company can knock their socks off on the lowest quality card they make, with a lower price, I think it makes more sense to buy elsewhere.

I wonder if the video editors on The Titanic ever went, "Sorry, I can't right now. I'm busy synching the Titanic..."
