So I shoot traditional photography as well as sports (although most of my sports photography is not of professional sports). I've been limping along with (believe it or not) a 50d. Been wanting to upgrade but haven't had the money...until now.

Anyway, considering a used 1dMkIII but can't figure out whether I should do that or a new 7d as they're similar in price. I'll be keeping the 50d for the other stuff and using the 1d/7d for sports mainly.

I've read the differences in IQ, etc. and can't determine whether (totally) whether I'll get better high ISO performance out of the 1d. I've been wanting to shoot more basketball but the 50d just can't do it in most gyms.

What say you?

Thanks.

Id take a 1DIII over the 7D personally. AF/FPS/noise in my opinion are all better.

That's what I thought but I've read some other things saying the 7d can do quite well, which is why I'm considering it.

I have no (personal) experience with a 1d so I can't comment. I've shot with my friend's 7d a little (although no sports).

What are you lacking in your body? High ISO? What lenses do you have? Always upgrade glass before body unless you've mastered the body and know that there is nothing else you can do to make it better.

This is true, your 50D can do a lot. Check out this thread for some inspiration: https://photography-on-the.net …read.php?t=701776&page=16

I came up to the 1D3 from the T2i, and I think there is a significant IQ difference -- larger and higher-quality sensor with less space between the pixels, I believe.

If you are considering the upgrade, here's the thread I used to help me with my decision: https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1200639

Thanks. I have done some crazy things with my 50d--getting MUCH more out of it than I should be able to. But it just won't do EVERYTHING I need it to do. :(

I'll check out that thread.

Thanks.

Sorry I didn't reply to this earlier.

For shooting indoor sports I'm lacking high ISO performance. I already use L glass so I can't upgrade that any more. :(

I would love a 1dx but that is nowhere near in the budget at the moment. I don't make enough off sports to stretch for a 1dIV yet either. I make most of my money off real estate photography and I do regular portraits and the occasional wedding (a couple a year).

Been debating on this for a while. I do like the 7d but I don't believe it will give me what I'm after for sports like the 1d will from what I've read. The 50d does just fine for the other things I shoot although the 7d would do them better. I'm just after better sports performance to try and expand that part of my business as that's what I enjoy shooting most.

Can I suggest the 7D for now? If you start doing a lot more sports, it will be a great backup body to the 1D. I always carry 2 bodies. If you put the 7D on one side with a 70-200 and the 50D on the other with a 24-70, you will be able to rapidly switch focal lengths. Once the sports takes off, pick up the 1D and move the 7D to the lesser used side. Good luck!

I'm confused. Why not get the 1D now and use the 50D for backup? 1D3 and 7D+grip cost about the same right now, used.

Well, I already shoot a lot of sports, just working to get paid on it. :)

I shoot my sons' baseball games (they're 10 and 6). I can do just fine during day games but once the sun goes down, the lighting is horrible (at best) at most of the fields they play at. I put the camera down when that happens as I know I won't get much.

Also been invited to shoot some basketball. Shot a game the other day and was shooting at 2500 ISO on the 50d. Shots weren't as bad as you might think as I have a LOT of experience shooting at high ISOs with my 50d and actually get usable stuff at higher ISOs than a lot of people. However, they weren't what I'd try and sell.

The 7d is great but I have the 50d to do the other type of shooting and wanted something geared for sports. I plan to upgrade the 50d to the new 5d eventually as it should work quite well for my real estate photography business. But I don't have it in the budget.

I just decided to go with a used 1d3. Keeping the 50d for other things and as a backup.

Thanks to everyone for your input!!!

Thanks. Looking forward to getting it and playing. I'm also going to work with it for some portraits and other things and compare it to what I'm getting with the 50d. I keep reading how the IQ is better. I'm thinking it may become my go-to body.
