Not looking to spend $6.50 a gel for a Rosco 20x24 sheet, especially since I'm going to be cutting them into circles to fit my gel holder. Any recommendations on less expensive gels?

Perfect for speedlites, not larger studio strobes.

Why doesn't Rosco make more 10x12 gels? I wish they offered a variety of 10x12 bundle packs, not just the one.

Any why are most gets 20x24? I'm new to gels, as you can tell.

Thats big enough to cover most theatrical spots. I think the problem you would find is that if you could find a smaller size, they would still be about the same price per sheet.

The material cost of just about any product is a tiny proportion of the eventual selling cost so a half-sheet wouldn't automatically be half the price of a full sheet. Selling prices are just not proportional to size. Anyway, US$6.50 is hardly expensive - you couldn't even get one gallon of petrol/diesel for that in the UK (not even one of your smaller US gallons).

What we use are spin-offs of the cinema/theatre industry who have to cover much larger, continuous light sources. The much-vaunted Rosco sample books (Lee also make them, corresponding exactly with the filter gels used by Rogue) while used by many for their flashguns, are quite literally no more than sample books designed to enable selection of appropriate colours. They are, naturally, rather small and wouldn't cover your Grid attachment but they would enable you to choose a single colour which you deem appropriate and then just buy a single sheet of that.

PS Just spotted the Lego bricks on RHS - perhaps the presence of "small person" in the household influences your aversion to spending on gels? Pretty understandable then. Take care not to stand on them in your bare feet, I remember the pain only too well even 40 years down the line.

Phil ǁ Kershaw Soho Reflex: 4¼" Ross Xpres, 6½" Aldis, Super XX/ABC Pyro in 24 DDS, HP3/Meritol Metol in RFH, Johnson 'Scales' brand flash powder. Kodak Duo Six-20/Verichrome Pan. Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!
