I noticed that Manfrotto has several solutions for trekking with a tripod. Can someone please recommend which one will work with my current combination of 498RC2 head on 3020 Legs? Not looking for another backpack, just a solution for the tripod.

Thanks

Or does it have to be Manfrotto?

Thanks LV. Any descent quality brand will do.

Ok. That strap is fine; fairly wide on the shoulder, soft. Does fine with my 055XPROB and 498RC2.

Carring a backpack and the strapped tripod might be an issue; don't know how you plan to do it. I had my wife carry the tripod ;)

Nice wife, mine would just give me that look.

I'll manage, but that strap looks perfect. I do have to replace my Expedition 5 sooner or later and this is one reason, good for a monopod, bad for a descent tripod.

Thanks again.

This looks like a nice unit. I use a Manfrotto and it times it is a pain in the a*s!

This strap by Manfrotto (external link) is the closest thing to the Manfrotto "Long Strap" that I bought many years ago. It works extremely well and is simple/fast to apply and remove.

Bogen used to sell wide straps with a special threaded screw which fit the threaded hole in the spider of Bogen (Manfrotto) tripods, like this strap on a Bogen 3221 tripod (predecessor to Manfrotto 055)...

...and a loop at the other end, that could slip over one/all the tripod legs (to hold them closed). I still own a Bogen 3236 tripod with Bogen strap like the one pictured, although I sold the 3221 with its strap.

Now I use an Optech Super Classic controlled stretch strap with 'binocular ends' with my Gitzo 2530, to form a suitably sized loop at the ballhead/column (shown) and another loop at the other end which is sized to fit one of the tripod legs...

Wilt, thanks for your input. How do you like the 2530 legs btw?

You guys hit it head on. I ordered both the head and the strap last night. Looking forward to them both.

I am generally very happy with characteristics of the Gitzo. The Gitzo wins on stability; it sucks on ergonomics (vs. the Bogen/Manfrotto that it replaced). I wouldn't own a Gitzo until after they came out with the ALR and the G-Lock, so that the legs could be set up as rapidly as the Bogen leg set.

  • One beef is that the locks for variable leg spread are poorly designed...you can easily pinch yourself while spreading the legs wider. And I have done it more than once, in spite of being aware of the issue. I wish the variable spread locks were designed like the Manfrotto leg spread releases, which were a much nicer push-to-close no-pinch design!

  • And I also prefer the Manfrotto spike...screw in the rubber tip to expose the metal spike; OTOH the Gitzo rubber tips are difficult to pull off the spikes, and then you have three rubber items to lose!
