I bought my first dslr 4 years ago (a 450d) and shortly after I bought a Lowepro Fastpack 350 to carry it in.
I absolutely love this bag because it sits very comfortably on my back, the waist-support fits perfectly, it is very easy to access your camera without putting the bag on the ground and it has room for non-photography gear as well. I use this bag for family trips so it's nice to have room for a couple of diapers, baby wipes, clothes etc.

Since then my kit has changed substantially and I'm beginning to have problems fitting it all in the fastpack 350.
I now have:

5d mk2 (gripped)
24-70L
70-200L f4
85 f1.8
50 f1.8
Sigma 35 f1.4
Flash

I can fit all of this in the camera compartment of the fastpack 350, but it's a pretty tight fit and I have to remove the lens hoods which is beginning to annoy me a little. The lens hoods are now placed in the top compartment, but that means less room for additional flashes, flash triggers, extension tubes, lcd viewfinder etc.

So basically my kit has outgrown this bag and I need a larger backpack.

I have spent quite some time researching but I have yet to find a backpack that seems to live up to what I need so I would like to hear your suggestions.

I need a backpack which

Has room for a 15" laptop
Has a sternum strap
Has a waist belt
Has a way to quickly access your camera
Can hold all my gear with the lens hoods reverse mounted on the lenses

  • 5d mk2 (gripped)
  • 24-70L
  • 70-200L f4
  • 85 f1.8
  • 50 f1.8
  • Sigma 35 f1.4
  • 3 Flashguns
  • 4 Flashtriggers
  • LCD viewfinder
  • Set of extension tubes
  • Filters
  • Extra batteries and chargers (for camera and flashes)
It would be great if the bag had a little room for personnal stuff, but that is not essential.
If it could fit another camera body that would be great but that is not essential either.

I've been looking at the Kata PL bug 203 or 205 and the Ape Case ACPRO2000 as well as the Vanguard Skyborne 51 and I would love to hear from people who have these bags as well as people who might have other suggestions.
Any suggestion will be much appreciated :)

If your budget allows, the F Stop Satori EXP will fit all that stuff with room to spare, and will remain comfortable fully loaded as well as being better for your back than the ones you listed due to proper weight distribution aided by an internal aluminium frame. I had one, and it was great (except that it was too big for my needs).

Quick access is not exactly possible, you have to take the bag off, but once it is off it is just a matter of unzipping the back panel to get to your photo equipment.

That looks like a really awesome bag, but unfortunately it's a lot more expensive than my budget allows.
I'm thinking something around 200$. If the perfect bag costs 250$ thats fine and if I can find one that is cheaper thats great, but 359 + ? is too much.

Thanks for your suggestion though and if I ever get back problems I'll remember that one :)

Lol did you read what bag he's currently using.

I just posted up a similar thread to yours. I went with the F Stop Loka but someone also suggested the Tenba Medium Shootout. It would have been my second choice and you could get it for around $250.

Sorry for the late reply but my wife has just given birth to our third child so I have been kind of busy :)

Those F-stop bags look very nice, but is it possible to bring a 15inch laptop in the loka?

I guess I better start saving for one of those F-stop bags, but if anybody can come up with a cheaper solution I'm all ears :)

Congratulations!

I can fit a 16" laptop in my Guru, so the Loka should be able to handle a 15".

As for a cheaper solution, forget the pram for the baby, put him/her in the Loka :D

I cannot give enough credit to F-Stop bags... I have the Loka with Small and Medium ICU.

That bag is perfect airline carry on size, big enough for a weekends clothes with a body plus travel lens, secure straps for a pro tripod down the side. Out walking?.... room for a midlayer, waterproof, bladder and a spot of lunch. Oh and of course a 7D 17-55, 70-200, 50 and the associated junk!

Does the Lowepro Pro Runner 450 AW interest you? @$190? The only drawback would be it's not a fast access pack.
