i found a lens ,second hand
it's a sigma Sigma 12-24 f4.5-5.6 DG bought in 2005

it looks in good condition , no scratches or micro scratches on the lens, glass

it's cost only 200€,265,61$

may i ask you a question ?
i would like to use with my 5d mark 2 and 7d

well , are there some issues between this lens bought in the 2005 and system focus of the recent canon

i know some sigma need to be re-chipped

could you give me some advises to check if it's a good dial ?

which kind of tests should i do?

take some shots?
check some part of the lens?

thanks
greetings

I wouldn't worry so much about AF on a lens that wide, I mean, depth of field is going to be huge at whatever focus distance you use, right?

Do you shoot in very cold conditions? I know my old Sigma non HSM motor would literally being to freeze after 1-2 hours in cold weather (think -4C or below).

it wouldn't be AF as much as it'd be the issue with not being able to stop down the lens

as far as i know there aren't any issues with that lens...I can't tell how much they're asking, but it should work out fine for you...and if you don't overpay you should be able to resell it if you find you don't like it

yes i shoot sometime at -20C, and after 1-2 hours what does it happen ? start to focus again ?

did you upgrade your sigma 12-24 ?

is there a better visible/rilevant image quality in the new version ?

thanks

Agreed!

I think it's one of those few with very little problems on that end, but you have to be aware that at those focal lengths that little lens is quirky at best, you can get amazing shots out of it, but it's going to take a lot of effort. Check out Brenizer's review of the II version of this lens: http://www.ryanbrenizer.com …ew-sigma-12-24mm-mark-ii/ (external link) he uses it brilliantly, I think.

when sigma lenses have a rechipping issue, you can only shoot the lens wide-open...if you were to stop it down, you would get an error...

i don't think you should have any problem with that though

The motor will start to be slow, and eventually not work very well after a few hours in those temperatures. Once it warms up, it's OK again. I only had the old 24-70 2.8, never the 12-24.

Interesting thread and I don't want to sidetrack it but I'm looking into the possibility of buying a backup body with this particular Sigma lens as well as the 50 1.4 and the 120-400. Does anyone know if they have any issues that I should be concerned about? I'm looking at a pretty good deal on the outfit and may sell or trade some of what I have at that point, but I'd like to know value and any potential problems for the 12-24 and the other two lenses mentioned.

I have a Sigma 12-24 from around that time frame, and have used it with all my bodies (10d, 7d and 5d3) and it works fine with all of them, (no rechip needed). Although I have not used it extremely cold weather.

hi
i boguht it
it's a 12-24 4.5/5.6 DG EX HSM model I not II (should be like usm canon ? can i move manually with af on ?)

well the lens is odd , @ 12 sometime focus at 2 , sometime between 2 and infinity and sometime at infinity

on a tripod and a remote shutter
the focus ring doesn't stop in the same position :confused:
with the live view is amazing sharp , but without live view the images look soft

i stopped @ f11 almost the time

but the auto focus at such focal like 12 or 24 could give me so soft image?

i can't belive...

Advise help, Sigma 12-24 2005 broken

I have a Sigma 12-24 zoom lens, about 6 years or so old. It has been acting erratically by not stopping down to the right f-stop or by not auto focusing. I sent it to Sigma for repair but no luck. They said it needed D Gear replaced and the part is no longer available and sent it back to me. What are my options? Sell it for parts as is, seek other private repair facilities, use it as paper-weight, open it up have fun ...? Does anyone have access to spare parts?

Thanks.
