Oh, if only I could take pictures worth backing up.

I looked into Carbonite and didn't get it for the exact same reasons mentioned here: data throttling and the many types of files they won't automatically back up, such as video files.

I simply use a Time Capsule at home and then I also have a large hard drive that I store off-site and bring home at least once a quarter to run an additional backup (or more often if necessary). I also balanced out the cost, and it came out cheaper for me to use two additional hard drives versus paying for online backup, assuming that I don't have a string of hard drive failures.

3 months is a lot of potential data to lose if the house burns down.

I went with Crashplan because it doesn't have the limitations of Carbonite. Basically, the limit is your own Internet connection's upload speed. I also like that they'll keep deleted files and many, many versions of every file. To do that locally would cost a lot for the drive space.

Which is why I put in parenthesis "or more often if necessary". If I'm working on a major project, then the off-site drive will come home more often.

Of course, the way I'm doing it won't work for everyone. If you're a full-time pro, then an online backup system might be easier. But for someone like me, it works perfectly.
