Squirrel! (Another... I know...)

Still getting a hang of the new 7D, so just sticking around home.

Nice shot but I have to ask. Is that the color of the squirrel? Because that's a new one for squirrels for me. I'm not criticizing your shot in any way. I'm just wondering if it was a white balance thing or whether the squirrel really looks that color. Please don't take my question as criticism. I used to live in Indy and I know all the squirrels are all red there and some of them do run toward orange but I've never seen one that orange before.

Thanks, and nope! This fella is really that orange! Most of them around here are that colour. Look up the Eastern Fox Squirrel.

What part of Indy do you live in? The little things were all over the place where I worked out by Eagle Creek building houses. That's been a lot of years ago but we have family there and still go back to visit often. I lived off of Southeastern a while and on North Gray between Michigan and New York plus I lived in Linwood Square. But I spent time all over town installing tv cable. Wow I was young back then. So I saw lots and lots of squirrels when I was working outside. I just don't remember them being that orange. I know they were more orange than the red squirrels where I lived up until a few months ago. It was the same breed but they looked different. It's all gray squirrels where I'm at now but they look different than the grays back home too. Apparently there's a lot of variation in the colors of squirrels from place to place. Indy is such a spread out place I can see where squirrels up close to Noblesville could look entirely different than squirrels down close to Mooresville and Indy really pretty much covers that whole area and then some. Looking from a satellite the city metro area covers about 40 miles across or more depending on what direction you want to look at. Some areas are more settled than others of course. It could be argued that Noblesville is part of the metro area and so is Franklin and Mooresville. There isn't a lot of open area between those places anymore. It's a really big city when you lay it out on a map. That's plenty of distance to see a variation in the color of animals I would think.

I'm up in Zionsville. It's hard to know. It may just be a colour variation, but I think it may have had to do with the temperature of the light hitting him. I'll see if I can snag more shots tomorrow. It hangs around here quite a bit.

I was just curious about it. It's not a big deal anyway. Zionsville is probably the only place I never worked when I was living there. I was all over the area working construction jobs etc. but I just never got to Zionsville for some reason. I worked at Noblesville and Beech Grove and over by Eagle Creek and the east side a lot. I did work on a gas station in the Zionsville area but not for long and I never got away from 465 for much of anything.

That certainly is a nice shot regardless. And obviously there is a good bit of orange to that squirrel. I don't think it's the light temp.. The tree isn't shaded orange.
