I've read that a red filter will enhance the contrast of a B&W photo. Has anybody tried that with a G3? Is it better to enhance using Photoshop.

I have a Tiffen red 24 filter, and I find it practically useless. If you want better BnW shots, you can get much more refined results with photoshop.

Have a look at Ian Lyons tutorial http://www.computer-darkroom.com/tutorials/tutorial_2_1.htm (external link) it seems typical BW filters are superfluous with digital photography.
