I don't normally do this but I'm hoping to get a little advice.

My mom is interested in a camera that has good/decent manual controls but also pretty compact. The size of these two are about the smallest and biggest she'd want in a camera.

I've done a decent amount of research and I have seen the good IQ of both. Since both are relatively in the same price range, I'm having a hard time deciding between the two.

Any help would be appreciated, and if you have any specific questions that would still need to be answered, do ask.

Thanks.

I've used the G11 and X10, and I find I prefer the IQ of the X10. One important thing is, the X10 produces fantastic jpeg images, but rather disappointing RAW files. So it depends on the user, if you think your mom wont be using RAW, i think the X10 delivers better results.

Also the lens on the X10 is faster (f2-f2.8 at the long end), and has better ISO performance. Both can produce nice images in good light, but in low light I find the X10 better.

For me, RAW is important, and ultimately I gave away my x10 (to my mom!).

Hope this helps a little...

Thanks for the input. I'm pretty sure my mom will be using jpegs since she doesn't plan (nor have the time) to process photos.

The faster lens of the X10 was definitely something I was strongly considering. The X10 is as fast as the G12 at the tele end of the zoom range.

I'll second what audipat said. I've also used the G11 and X10. I think I kept the G11 for maybe a month. The X10 is easily the best P&S I've ever owned or used.

what does that mean? Don't you have to post process raw images?

I'll talk to her about it. I don't think she's in a total rush to buy and I just looked up the X20 and the preview of the improved sensor and AF seems promising.

And for the coin of the X20, it better produce some mighty fine results! The G15 can be had for 400 in some places with a f1.8-f2.8 @140mm. Just my 2 cents

Any places where the G15 can be found at that price? I should add that my mom wants to buy new.

I have the Fuji X10 and love it for its build , colour rendition , intelligent flash and in-built after shot RAW processing.
However, there isn't a popular third party converter for the RAW files unless you like Silkypix so it's just as well that the camera itself does a brilliant job.

The new X20 promises a far better sensor in terms of resolution and a better viewfinder so it might be worth waiting until the X10 becomes available at knockdown prices.
For my part I shall buy an X20 as soon as it comes out but keeping the X10 for the EXR sensor.

In terms of the G cameras I have a G9 which is simply not good enough now and a G1X that will obviously beat the X10 for IQ.

My daughter has the the X10 and I have a G15. As said above, the X10 produces great jpgs but not so good in raw. Unless she wants a retro design or willing to learn all the quirks of the Fuji, I would get the G15, which is a great little general purpose camera.

This is a really interesting post for me.
I miss my G9 a lot. I'm considering a G15 as a carry-everywhere camera. I keep confusing myself wondering whether Nikon has finally got a camera right with the P7700. I regretted buying previous Nikon P&S cameras (P9100). It's lens would suit me better the way that I work now. The focal length is similar in range to the lens on the G9; I found the G11 a little short.
The Fuji interests me until I find out how much it costs. Then the G15 looks more of a bargain. ;)
However, that's just me. :)
