The Canon extenders x1.4 and x2 (both, second versions, not the latest) I tried to install on this lens don't fit due to a construction detail.
Since I don't have nothing else on hand to try and test, what other extenders (brands) can be used with the 70-300 VC and how drastically they "kneal" the lens' IQ?

I would look at the Tamron tele converters. I would think they would work with your lens.

Kenko PRO 300 AF DGX 1.4X teleconverters work with any lens(except EF-S) and get good reviews: http://www.kenkoglobal.com/TP-PRO300AF-DGX1_4-2X.html (external link)
