I've had the 100-400 IS L and the Bigma (non DG version). I wouldn't choose on IQ but whether I needed IS. Both are very capable indeed if you know how to use a long lense and expose shots correctly. I'll probably get a Bigma again for my next big adventure. The Sigma 100-300mm f4 is stellar and works well with a 1.4x TCon if you want another zoom option.

I have gone back and forth between the 100-400L and the Bigma. At first I was thinking I might need IS but will probably be shooting outdoor sports of my children with a monopod. If I shoot wildlife, I will probably be on a tripod. I would like to save the money and get more reach if needed.

Have you tried the Bigma with a 1.4x?

Yes ;) MF only with the Kenko Pro and Sigma 1.4's I used, which would be fine other than the viewfinders on these DSLR's tend to suck. They're too dark unless you have a very fast lens. Stick my 85mm 2.0 or 50mm 1.4 on and it's like an African Summer has arrived. Stick a Bigma and a TCon on and it's like living in Finland   Wasn't to my standards IQ wise and either was the 100-400 IS L, but in IDEAL conditions then I imagine you'd get a result. I've also tried 2.0x Kenko Pro and Sigma on both and both sucked.

Other than the MF being a pain how was the picture quality?

Dunno what I can say other what I said already:

IQ is subjective so it depends on what you want. Mitcon has experience with the Bigma and TCons and so check his posts in the Wildwife and Birds section. I don't think I have any TCon shots any more.

I only PP when I need a shot but I have a few that are maybe fairly typical and give some idea of what a Bigma can do:

Dunno if this is a 100% crop or not it's been so long ...

Pretty sure this was 100% crop tho'

This is a 100% crop I think, but massive compression 94k!!
