Thinking about purchasing Lightroom 4 from Amazon but it is available in a download or boxed version. Both are the same price, however with a download you get instant gratification. Wondering if once you download the program if it can be burned to a DVD so that you don't need to re-download if you have computer problems or changes?

Yes, BUT...

Abobe will only permit activation on two machines for a given serial number. Beware that and have a way to restore a crashed machine so you can DEACTIVATE the copy you install before re-installing it!

If you want the disc with the instant gratification a download, order the boxed product from Amazon and download the trial from Adobe. Use the trial until your box arrives, then just enter the serial number from your purchase. No need to reinstall.

Actually, Lightroom is not like Photoshop in that sense. Yes you only have permission to run it on two machines, but if an old machine "dies" you can install it on another one -- you don't have to do the deactivate/reactivate hassle that you do with Photoshop.

This is what I did when I upgraded from LR2 to LR4. For some reason, they didn't sell the discounted upgrade version as a download. So I just ran the trial from Adobe until the box arrived with my serial. It seems like a pointless waste of material and fuel but oh well.

Thanks. Hadn't thought about a trial version. I did a trial version of some HDR software a couple months back and it put a big watermark over my pics. Looks like a trial version download is in order.

The download is exactly like the purchased version except for one thing, it dies after 30 days. Feeding it a serial number keeps it alive.
Moreover, the boxed version will be 4.0 and you will need to update to 4.3, so you will be doing the download anyways.

Buy the download, and resister it at Adobe.com with an Adobe ID.

Then it doesn't matter that you don't have any media, if you need to install it again, log into your adobe.com account and you have access to your serial number and a download.

It is just an installer package so yes it can be burned to DVD as a backup. I have mine on a USB drive in a folder along with the email that gives the serial number. I use a thumb drive because of the update issues mentioned above. I bought v4 of LR but we are now up to 4.3 so each time I download the new version I delete the old one. I guess when they change to v5 I will burn it to DVD as there wont be any more v4 updates - unless I decide to jump to v5.

Are you running a Mac OS? On Windows the update overwrites the previous version, so no need to remove it.

He's talking about the downloaded version he keeps as a backup on the thumb drive.

I'd even forgot I have thumb drives sitting here. Perfect idea.
