Just wounding how many of you out there either went to University/College to study photography? Was it worth it? And how many of you have just dedicated some hard time to self studying and learning? I'm just intrigued as I'm new to the photography world and really really beginning to enjoy it! So debating going back to college and then on to uni to do a degree. (English college then uni of course incase it confused anyone!)

So just wanting to get some ideas on what people think of different routes into the photography world? Or if people have any different routes they want to tell of!

No photography degree for me, but I'll stir the pot a little. Which do people think would be better for a person starting a photography business in the long run:

to have a formalized photography education and self-taught (books, internet, etc.) business skills

or

to have a formalized business education with self-taught (books, internet, etc.) photography skills?

I think a business degree will serve you far better. I did not take any arts or photography courses but I did spend a few years working under another photographer and that is where I learned most of what I knew when I decided to go it alone. I did take business in college.

What you decide to take is somewhat dependant on what you want to do with it. You say you want to do photography in college and then again in university. I would say that this is overkill if you are simply going to be going out and shooting weddings and portraits. If you want to work for a large advertising agency or such then more education will serve you better. I still say a major in business with a minor in arts and/or photography will serve you well if you simply want to hang out your own shingle.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

it all depends on the type of photographer you want to be. If you want to do portraits and weddings, i'd say no. If you're doing more conceptual work or really technical work, then i'd say go for it.

Business major, speech communication minor here.

I know my photography isn't the best of the best, but my ability to sell my skillset has helped me be a profitable part-time photographer for the past several years.
