Ok why in curves when I go to use the color samler to pick my shadows and highlights- it won't let me use the sampler. It stays on the eyedropper? Any idea why. 20d and pscs2

Can you explain a little more in detail exactly what you are trying to do and what PS is doing when you do that?

yes in a jpeg I would create a new fill or adjustment layer and choose threshold. From that I would get my darkest and lightest point of the pic to make my shadows and highlights adjustments from. I would choose the color sampler under the eyedropper to sample the lightest and darkest point of the pic but in raw it won't let me choose the color sampler it just defaults to the eyedropper and won't budge off of it.

There is no highlight/shadows/midpoint in ACR. Curves in ACR doesn't have the capability to set a black/white points. You would be better asdvised to use the Alt-click method on the Exposure and Shadows sliders in the Adjust tab. This actually allows more accuarcy in setting these points because clipping will not only be indicated in the histo, but on the image itself.
