Hi, I thought I would try some 2nd curtain sync, however it's not working.

I'm using the Yongnuo 622C triggers with Nissin 866Mkii guns. First thing I noticed, 2nd curtain sync is only available in the Nissin in TTL mode. OK, will have to live with that.

I put the 622s into Mix mode, then I set 2nd curtain via the 866 advance menu and the TX won't overwrite it. But it won't fire. It fires at the 1st curtain (or it might just be the pre-flash for TTL metering most likely).

Camera is in Manual, exposure time of around 2 seconds. Should this work or not?

If not I guess I could try faking it by pressing the Test button on a spare trigger but I'm not an octopus :)

What camera?

Place Nissin in stand-alone mode, E-TTL.

Use Remote mode.

Leave all settings to the camera flash control menus. It's the camera which initiates the various syncs.

It should work, when configutration is appropriate.
Canon’s programming of 2SC requires certain settings:
• Can be in E-TTL or Manual flash modes
• Must be in a Creative mode
• Not in Multi (stroboscopic) or HS sync
• Shutter of 1/30th sec (varies by camera model) through to Bulb
• Not in Wireless mode (and therefore no group functions available)

You will find more detail in "The Other...Guide" see link in signature.

For which cameras does the shortest possible shutter speed vary? Haven't seen anything but that it has to be longer than 1/30 s (thus 1/30 will not work).

But in this case it's two seconds, so that's not the issue.

you need to set 2nd curtain sync on the camera menu of 622c transmitter even with mix mode. This is one of a few options you can't set on the flash with 622c mix mode.

Hi, the camera is a 1ds3. As per Clive's message, the 2nd curtain sync option is disabled unless the flash is mounted on top. With it mounted on-top and the 622C triggers removed, the 2nd curtain flash is working, but that's not really where I want the flash.

With a 622C mounted on-camera, and switched on, you should be able to select 2CS in the flash control menu. If it is disabled, then set Wireless mode to Disabled.

Note that this setting is between the camera and the mounted 622; it has nothing to do with any flash or remote 622.

Since I need to disable wireless mode in camera menu to get 2nd curtain. Is there a way to have different power levels on different off camera flashes? I have one 580EX, two YN568EX, a 7D and four 622c units.

At least the 580 EX can be set manually. You have to walk to the flash to do it, of course, when you do it with this type of control.

The reason Canon are technically prohibited from offering 2nd curtain sync in optical wireless control mode is that right after sending out the setup info to the slaves, the slaves enter "dumb slave mode", i.e. they wait for a flash to trigger on. But that mode times out very quickly, since the next time a picture should be taken, they shouldn't look at a single flash as a trigger command, but as the first info in a stream of wireless setup data packets. Thus they can't let that mode stay until the 2nd curtain fires, since they can't know for how long to wait.

Yes. Use Mix mode. But you lose remote control of the YN568EXs.
