Meredith vs. Methodist College. My first time shooting basketball. The gym is more like a high school gym than a college gym, but Meredith is a small women's college.

Shot with both 5D3 and 7D using 70-200/2.8 and 85/1.8. I could not get the 85 to focus on the 7D, so it stayed in the 5D after the fist 3 minutes of the game.

Comments and pointers appreciated.

They all seem a little soft, what was your focus mode strategy? Also each photo except for the first has someone with their back to the camera. More experience will result in better timing to catch the peak action.

Lousy light. These four were shot with the 7D at ISO 6400, barely keeping SS @ 1/500s, thus lots of noise. I may need better noise reduction sw than what I can do in Aperture :(.

I will work on the shot selection and probably stick with the 5D3 next time.

Thanks.

I use my 5D3 now for basketball. I also use my 50mm f1.4 for a lot of the shots.

What mode are you shooting? Aperture priority, manual? Your exposure seems all over the place. Same with the other sports galleries on your site.

The were Aperture priority: set to 2.8 or 3.2; ISO set to 6400 to keep the shutter speed up. The latter was a challenge with 7D and 70-200. Probably wrong camera/lens combo for basketball.

The HS baseball shots were the first sports shots that I ever shot and I evolved with a lot of input from this forum. I still am and unfortunately seem to draw lousy venues that challenge my limited skills even more. :o

I also just started shooting small college basketball, and yes, the lighting and focus is giving me fits!
I've been trying to stay under ISO 3200, even shooting at 1600 and recovering some exposure in Lightroom to limit the noise.

I noticed that all four of your shots need to be straightened. Use the verticals in the background, such as the scoreboard edge, doors or cinderblock lines. :D

Here is one of my recent games:

Hey V4: Couple of things.
#1: I think I would consider trying manual instead of aperture priority. It might help with the exposure not being so inconsistent.
#2: If your worried about high ISO stick with your 5D3. It has great high ISO abilities.
#3: Basketball isn't really a game for horizontal framing. I would take more vertical exposures, especially on the offensive end when players are driving to the basket.
#4: Watch your horizons.

Thanks for posting and keep shooting.

Ben

I have a long away stretch for the two teams that I typically shoot, so I revisited the shots from this game, with comments in mind.
I straighten, cropped, ran Noiseware.
Next game is Thursday night, so I hope to do better.

Here are the reworked shots:

Keep your 7D at home. Especially places that are poorly lit. I haven't used my 7D ever since I got my 5d3. It handles high ISO so much better. Makes my shots so much better. I always shoot in manual mode. Always use custom white balance, when shooting indoors.I have a white balance disc, but you can use a grey card, or just a plain white sheet of paper. I always shoot raw too. It takes a little more effort in Photoshop, but you can fix a lot more things like white balance, sharpening, noise reduction, etc.
