I have a Canon 5D Mk3 and currently the L series 24-105, 70-200 (f4) and 100 Macro f2.8

I am abouit to go overseas and am thinking of getting a 50mm. My dilemma is not knowing whether to settle for the Canon 50mm EF f1.4 or for almost another $1000 get the L f1.2

I am really happy that I went L glass for the other lenses but sacrificed the f2.8 on the 70-200 because of weight and cost.

Would I be getting a much better outcome from the 50mm L, for the extra money?

Any guidance gratefully accepted.

Cheers
John

Well, that's another personal decision.. 'worth it' and 'settle' are hard to quantify.

I was in the same boat myself, and just ordered the 50L this morning. I did that, for me, because of the very unique look that lens seems to provide (at least in the sample thread) @ 1.2. That being said, many have commented that it can be finicky, and take some time to get used to shooting with it. For some people, traveling may not be the best time to get used to a new lens like that.. for others, it may be the perfect time.

On the other hand, I picked up the 85 1.8, and not the 85L II, because I thought the 85 1.8 was a solid performer, at much less cost, and much less weight. I also knew I'd get the 50L, and use that for any low-light needs where 1.2 would come in handy.

Putting all that aside, and putting myself in your shoes, I would get the 50L and take it with me. I would use the travel time to use it and see if it works for me, and then if I didn't like it, sell it when I returned. The market may be a bit different in Australia, but in general, I see 50L's range from $1,000-$1,200 USD used, so you'd be getting back ~90% of your money. Assuming your trip is more than a week or two, it's actually cheaper than the rental fee.

I used 50 f/1.4 for 10 years before upgrading to 50L. For my FF cameras, 50L is a great walk-around lens, and offers unparalleled sharpness and color rendition.

Really? Sharpness is not what it's know for but it's still a great lens. Do a search, this has been asked many times. For me I found the autofocus to be much more accurate with the L.

Yes, 50L is among the sharpest lens in my bag; the only other comparable lens is 85L II.

Man, I am thinking of going with the 1.4 to replace a lens I no longer use (10-22). I have played with a friends a little bit and really liked it, but it seems all of the above pretty much like the L a lot more.

My question; why is the 50 f/1.2 considered 'finicky' where the 85 f/1.2 is, generally speaking, not?

@ 10 feet @ f/1.2; the 50mm will have a dof of 26.1 cm
@ 10 feet @ f/1.2; the 85mm will have a dof of 8.92 cm

Shouldn't the 85mm f/1.2 be much more 'finicky' about missing focus?

I ask as I am debating whether to add a Canon 16-35 f/2.8+ Canon 50mm f/1.4 or a Samyang 14mm f/2.8 + Canon 50mm f/1.2 to my bag. I was thinking about making another topic but this kind of fits here...

Get the 50L and settle it one time for all! No need to upgrade in the future.

I agree; one can not be overly analytical about lens selection. Go to B&H, try out these lenses, and make a decision based on your preference for focal length. As long as you have steady hands, both lenses are super sharp.

I have owned them both and the Zeiss 50mm f2 MP and the 1.4 doesn't compare to either. I have owned a couple copies of the 1.2 and sometimes has a slower focus but it is worth the results of the image ( I actually have one in the mail on its way to me). The 1.4 was alright in my books but if you can afford either of the big boys go that route and you won't be disappointed.

I imagine it's due to the back-focus issue / lack of floating element and curved focal 'plane'.
