New 7D and the learning curve is a little intimidating.. Had a friend with a 7D also, send me his custom settings for shooting Birds in Flight.. I set the camera on CF1 and entered his settings and saved..

Newbie question - When I go to the field and set the camera on C1, how do I then change the basic settings (Exposure, shutter speed, etc) on the fly and keep it in the C1 mode? Perhaps I still don't have a 'big picture' of the "Custom Function" idea yet.. ;)

Appreciate your clarification !! (Makes my 450D look/feel like a point/shoot after seeing what this one will do!)

values will always be defaulted to what you initially saved. the question is how did you save it?

if you want c# to mimick M mode, then dial in your settings while in M mode, then go to menu and register it to one of you c# functions.

then you can always change aperture/shutter speed on the fly with the index wheel and thumb wheel. and if you want to reset it, just switch out of your C# function and switch back.

If you want one of your C# function to mimick Av or Tv mode, then set your preferences there and go into menu and save it as such. And while you're in that particular C# function, you can still change the Av or Tv values using the index finger wheel.

The values will remain as such until you decide to save over it with another set of preferences.

Think of switching to a Cx mode as a saved settings "starting point". From that starting point, you can continue to change your exposure, shutter speed and whatever other functions you require during shooting.

Going out of that mode, and back into the same Cx mdoe will put the settings back to how they were initially saved.

If you want to change the saved settings, go into the Cx mode you want, it will set the camera to the saved settings, checnge wjat you want, then register the new settings back to the same Cx position.

Turns out a gripped 7D + 622 + 580exII + 70-200 2.8 IS MK2 is BLOODY HEAVY! Who knew?!!

If the camera goes to sleep, when re-activated it will revert to the settings you saved to C1.
