Can 7d wirelessly trigger flash without built in flash firing

This may be a silly question to those who regularly do off camera flash but I am not sure. Thanks

No. But the built-in's firing won't affect the exposure.

It does have to flash. It does not have to flash during exposure. The commands to the slave flashes are emitted as pulsed light from the popup flash. In the Wireless setup screen there are a few selections. One pictures just the slave flash. Another pictures the slave and the popup. If you choose the one WITHOUT the popup pictured it will only issue commands and not fire for exposure.

Here we go again.
You can not control external flashes with the camera's built-in wireless controller without the camera flashing at the moment of exposure. It has to, to trigger the slaves at the right moment.
You can set that flash to be weak, but under certain circumstances you'll notice it anyway. Take a photo of something that's reflective, like a window, a mirror or an eye, and you'll see the reflection of the camera's flash.
