Hey guys,

I'm finally getting a good deal on a 5D2 and have planned on buying it in couple of days. A friend is against it though, he said "if you can the money and buy a 6D (when it's price is low) … you will have secured a good camera for the next 3 years! 5D2 will phase out after a year or so."

If I start saving another $500 - it will take me months :( - should I go for the 5D2 still? - that "Phase out after a year quote is bugging me".

Depends on how good your good deal on the 5d is. The 5d is still a great camera irrelevant of the 6d. I would buy one in a shot, and may do in the near future

The 5DII is no longer in production, it has already been phased out. There are a few new ones still for sale as stores get rid if their stock, but it's not like the camera will stop working.

Basically the MkII will give the same results as the 6D. The 6D has three big new features that may make it desirable, GPS and Wifi, and low light AF. I got to say, this weekend it would have been great to have Wifi and be able to upload pictures directly, but I digress.

The IQ of the 6D looks just a tad, and I mean a small tad better than the 5DMkII, and the MkIII as well, but if your primarily shooting between ISO50 and ISO6400, I don't think you'll see the difference. Bottom line, want full frame today and don't need GPS, Wifi, or low light focusing, get the MkII. If you need those features, or want those features, get the 6D.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

well, I guess 6D will be more "current" since we will probably not see 6D Mk II in a while, but it's really up to you to decide if the differences are worth $500 to you. Since you're saying that it takes months to save up $500, it seems like it's a fairly substantial amount of $ to you and unless there're some features in 6D you really want I'd just go with 5DII.

I'm still using a 5D and it hasn't been phased out. Perhaps your friend was referring to support from Canon? If the Mark II has all the features that you need, and the price is right, I say go for it!

Under $1500 - 800 Shutter count - 6 or 7 months warranty left, like new.

I hardly shoot at 6400. Don't need GPS or Wifi.

Yep, it is for now. Bills, School fee and what not gets everything.

I don't know if you can really call a DSLR obsolete unless you just can't get parts to make it function. The batteries for the 5Dii are still current and sold. all the full frame lenses will still fit. you can still buy a flash for it. etc...

Canon may have discontinued it, but they will still service the unit for many more years to come. They just stopped production, so i'd expect that if anything went wrong with the camera you can get Canon to fix it for easily the next 4-6 years. So i'd say you are a long way from Obsolete.

The 5Dii is a great camera and just because there are newer models does not make that model function any less than it has in the past. It shot a prime time TV show, so it can't be that bad of a unit.

Yes, some of the newer units do things better than it can, but so what. is it worth $500 to you? I bought a 50D about months before the 5Dii was released. if I hadn't of bought the 50D when I did, I would have gotten the 5Dii. But I decided to wait and saved up my money for 3+ years and bought the 5Diii instead. You can opt to buy the 6D, but know that in less than a year, there probably will be a better camera that comes along and makes that model look less. You pays your money and takes your pick.

could probably get a better deal if you look hard enough. I've paid ~$1950 for a brand new 5DII with the kit lens from an authorized dealer in Oct.

You know Canon body / lens warranties are non-transferable, right?

If you had a problem, you might get lucky and they might fix it for you, but technically (and right in Canon's own wording), unless the receipt has your name on it (unless it was a gift), the warranty is not valid.

Why on earth would a receipt have anyones name on it? The warranty is valid. All you need is the receipt and they will fix any issues in with the 1 year warranty.

Why wouldn't it? If you ordered online, you get an invoice with shipping info. If you buy in a store with a credit card, your name shows up on it from credit card. Unless you paid cash, it's going to have a name on the receipt. Regardless, you need to provide proof of purchase, and the warranty is not transferrable.

As I said, one might get lucky, and whomever at Canon receives the item may not care, but it's the rules. I'm just pointing out that having time left on the warranty doesn't guarantee service under that warranty if one isn't the original purchaser (or gift recipient).

"This Limited Warranty is only effective upon presentation of this warranty card and proof of purchase"

"THIS LIMITED WARRANTY SHALL NOT EXTEND TO ANYONE OTHER THAN THE ORIGINAL PURCHASER OF THE PRODUCT, OR THE PERSON FOR WHOM IT WAS PURCHASED AS A GIFT, AND STATES YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY."

EOS Util recognizes my 5D but tethering doesn't seem to work. DPP works fine with the RAW files - what am I missing? I haven't tried ZoomBrowser yet.
