I took a little drive to the southwest side of town where Norfolk Southern railroad and CSX share some tracks. I caught NS 9505 using the crossover to CSX tracks. Had I been a bit more alert, I'd have stood in the "V" of the two tracks for the shot, but I wasn't quite familiar with the situation.

Heading about a mile back towards town, I found Union Pacific #5101 heading south/westbound on the CSX line. Unfortunately, I could not get a shot at him as he approached due to heavy vegatation, but I did manage to get the number as it rode by.

Once he got by, I fired off a quick shot as the engines rounded the curve down the line.

I like the 1st and last picture. The bushes are a little distracting.

Thanks. Wasn't much I could do with the bushes. The train came before I found a good shooting position. But I got the ID numbers anyway. :)

Nice work, Tom.

I went out for a while this morning, but it was a little hazy, and there wasn't much running. This is after several days of beautiful, crystal clear mornings. Oh well. Timing is everything.:(

We had a lot of rail traffic today. Had a team of BNSF engines, but they were on the CSX tracks and I was at the NS tracks - couldn't get there to get a good shot, but I did see them in the distance. After my shoot, I came home, put the images up, and then headed to Wally World for some food-like substance. Lo and behold, 2 trains, no camera. :)

The areas I shot in today were new to me, so I'm still mentally planning for a better shot. It was more of an exploratory trip today.

I like the last one best. The first is blurry otherwise a descent shot. The second, the trees bother me.

The internet resized the first one, apparently in a rather destructive manner.

EDIT: I fixed #1 by setting it up to the original size (900 pixels wide) that I put on the net. I've got to remember to put 800 pixel images up on PBase, even if I want to post them bigger.

OK, I reset all of them to the original 900X600 that I had them on PBase. 800 is just wrong on a 3:2 ratio image.

Can't say I like the second one either, but it's part of the story. Those are weeds - I couldn't get to a spot to shoot the train so I fired from the best position I could get.

Cool shots. Were those wild grape vines in the third shot by chance?

Jon.

The first one is my favorite, easily a poster picture.

Thanks, all.

Jon, I'm not sure of the vegitation, but I think that it is possible that wild grapes were growing there. But it is more likely Kudzu, which is nearly impossible to get rid of.

Kudzu......one of my nicknames for my wife. (not because I can't get rid of her, but because of the way she takes over closets.)

Very nice photos. I always like to see UP Wings even if they are obstructed by vegetation.

I hate UP wings. Of course, that's all I see these days.

I've seen far less foreign power on the UP in the last few months. It makes for pretty boring train-watching.

I was hoping to see some foreign power today on NS, but all I got to see was Black & White (and red if you count the caboose).

Hopefully one of these days I'll be able to come out west to UP and BNSF country and get some photos of more colorful locomotives.

I saw a nice BNSF waiting on the siding while I was driving home from work today. Unfortunately, I had no camera.

We get a fair amount of foreign power here, possibly because CSX and NS have a strong presence. My local track is NS, but 20 miles away, the two run adjacent to each other, as seen in the first image.

One of the unfortunate circumstances from my outing the other day is that when I saw my first approaching train, I found a spot about 3/4 miles down the road, only to find myself along the wrong tracks (they run together for a short stint, with a crossover as shown in the first image). So, my great shot of BNSF power was reduced to this crop of a rather distant train. A train that I would not be able to shoot properly.
