I noticed that Amazon has gone from $1599 to $1799 and today (1/22/13) $1899 for a 5D body. Is this Canon bumping up the price, or Canon USA or what? Is the Mark II discontinued or not? I have one of these in my sights but it keeps moving away.. :(:(:(

Yes, the Mark II is discontinued. If you're seeing any new for sale, that's just remaining stock.

Since it was discontinued, I assume the instant rebates no longer apply, which is probably why you see some price variation.

Edit - Hrm, looks like instant savings still apply.. but even at B&H it's now $1799 after rebate.

So then, it appears that those of use wishing to upgrade to the Mark II should pull the trigger now before it gets crazy.. I just can't see the Mark III at the moment..or the 6D...

No, you should buy one used. Amazon uses a model to adjust price based upon demand(or theoretical demand), and availability. why on earth would you spend so much more for a new one?

That's a concern that I'm still wresting with.

The average USED price is hovering near $1500, which is not a HUGE savings. But it is appreciable. If I could find a USED model, with, say, a 6-month warranty,in the $1500 to $1600 range, that would be ideal. I have no problem with used, so long as the thing isn't beat up, and the actuations are under 75K or so. I'm keeping an eye on KEH but evidently so are about 30 million other guys.. lol

You should be able to get a used 5Dii for about 1300 with low actuations. I bought one off here which USPS returned to him due to being damaged in transit...$1250 with 600 actuations on it. That weekend I bought one locally for the same price with 2000 actuations. Long as you look around, you can save $500 on the price of a new one, and still get a great condition camera.

OK, now, to further muddy the waters (or howling the wolf, or whatever...)

Amazon has the 5D/II & 24-105L kit for $2599. But they have the 6D and 24-105 for $2499

Now what? That seems like a good deal, and it just means I have to stick up one more convenience store... lol.. decisions,decisions..

Based on that...I'd get the new tech 6d in a heart beat.

I don't know how the 6D specs compare to the 5D2, but assuming they're similar I'd go with the 6D also.

Trust me, I've been watching prices on the major online outlets (which are all very bunched together) and eBay and the rest. I'm leaning towards Amazon - 2% back in points (which will buy an SD card or two..), 12 months interest free financing, etc etc. The addition of the 24-105L lens is something else that was on the horizon anyway, and I just can't tell myself that a 6D and the lens for a hundred dollars LESS than a 5D/II and the lens is a bad deal. I may sleep on it and decide tomorrow. I have much of the money saved up anyway, but as the 5D/II crept up to, and now passed, the 6D price, the whole outlook has changed.
