artyman Sleepless in Hampshire More info | Jan 24, 2013 18:01 | #6 Some locos were named back in steam days and a few had what is called headboards, for premier routes like the Brighton Belle, The Royal Scot, The Flying Scotsman (which is also the name of a loco as well) the headboard being attached to the loco rostered for the run which could have been something else. Probably one of the most famous named locos is 'Mallard' a Gresley A4 Pacific, the other is in the class also had bird names, Kingfisher, Bittern (still running).
