So I just bought a used 1d3. I cannot (for the life of me) figure out how to get AF to work. I've got my lens on AF (28-70 f2.8L) but I can't figure out what I need to select in the AF menu area.

Help please... :)

Thanks.

Well, the AF menu is really for configuring HOW the AF works, to suit the task in hand. If your AF isn't working at all, it could be assigned somewhere other than the shutter button. Have you tried using the back buttons to focus?

I was trying to figure this out. And I sort of was wondering if that could have been mapped elsewhere. I then reset the settings to factory default and still nothing. I've never used a 1d--only my 50d. I don't get the AF points coming up in the viewfinder to select the one I want and it's not focusing.

:::scratching head:::

Ok, I've figured out how to get it to allow me to select the various focus points, however, it will not AF at all! Is there a setting/button somewhere I need to select in order to get it to AF? I can't find anything in the manual about it nor can I find anything online about it.

Long shot questions???

Does the lens af OK on other bodies?

You did a factory reset on the 1D i would have thought that would have restored shutter function to default of metering & af............if after all that it is still failing perhaps you have a non user correctable fault? You say it is second hand, did you try it before purchase, is there a returns option.

Best of luck but perhaps you have bought a 'turkey' :(

PS thinking out loud ~ if the lack of af is due to bad comms between lens and body maybe cleaning the lens and the body contacts would help ?

That was a great meal ~ you must have a good set of pans :p

Another long shot. Is the camera set for AI Servo and focussing but not beeping?

I tried two different lenses, which I use regularly on my 50d with no problems.

I bought from a user here who has a very good reputation so I couldn't try it before I bought it but I also don't believe it's a dud unless something happened in transit. Obviously, they could have sold me a dud but I'd be surprised with the guy's reputation.

I emailed him to see if I am missing something but I can't find anything. It just doesn't try to focus no matter what I try.

:::sigh:::

Good point but even in AI Servo af happens and is obvious in the viewfinder.....and the OP says he has a 50D so likely familiar with AI Servo actiin ?

Great idea but I have tried AI-Servo (what I always shoot on the 50d) and One Shot and still the same problem--no focus. :(

Ok, I can get it to focus now. Someone did remap the focus to another button--the zoom out button. Now I have to figure out how to map it back to the shutter button.

At least it works!

I would suggest leaving the focus on the back button and learn how to use it. Once you do, you won't go back to focus on the shutter button.

But if you really do want it back on the shutter button, I believe that is CF IV-1.

Thanks. I will give it try and see if I like it.

The user's manual is available for download. It sounds like you never got any.
