Among all the shovelers, mallards, teals, and thousands of coots, I caught this pair swimming in the marsh at the Sacramento NWR near Williams California the other day. I have looked through all my guides, but I'm darned if I can figure out what it is. Maybe a juvenile of something?
Any help much appreciated, thanks!

Looks like a gadwall to me. If they flew were their feet yellow? Pretty ducks.
Edit-I guess I was wrong. Just looked up gadwalls, not quite right. Looking at the feathers across the back, maybe a pintail hybrid?

I would guess it's a female Northern Pintail.

Definitely Gadwalls. They're quite handsome when you get close enough to see the fine detail.

Actually, you do. They are a Western resident during winter. You're just not looking in the right places :)
