the background really hurts this shot I think. My eye goes to the grey building not the cars

Seriously? there is nothing I can do about the background at the track, when I see a shot like this coming I take it quick because the cars won't stay like that very long.

are these taken handheld or from a tripod? We have same racing up where I live, my cousin does the photography for it a lot

You mean you couldn't have gotten them to race like that some place else on the track with a better background? JK Good shot man.

This is where a longer lens would help. A tighter crop would eliminate the distracting background. A longer shutter and panning would also help reduce the background distraction.

Also, this is where planning your shot comes into major play. Be very familiar with your track and the racing so that you are prepared and then follow the cars through the corner using AI Servo, and possibly Hi Burst.
