I’m fairly sure this is a broad-winged hawk. The shots were taken from about 100 feet away, so these are a huge crop, over 100%. It was also raining. I’m sure glad the 5D3 is weather sealed. I think he had both legs and was just holding one up to keep warm. Did I say it was also cold. I’m not a happy boy if the temperature goes below 70. C&C is always appreciated.

Nice shots!

This is a Red Shouldered Hawk though.

Thanks dfbovey.

I thought it was a Red Shouldered until it flew away and the black and white banding on the tail looked to be equal widths (but it was dark and rainy). The size looked to be 18-19 inches (guessing) which could be either a large broad-winged or a small red shouldered. So....I'm still not sure. Hope it is a red shouldered because it would be my first.

Congrats on your first Red Shouldered Hawk! :)

Broad Winged Hawks don't have red coloration like this at any stage. If it was on the smaller side, it was probably a male Red Shouldered.
