I just finished drafting the poster for my Karate club's annual tournament, I don't really know my way around Photoshop but this is what I came up with - feels like I should composite something into the background but I have no idea what / how.

Comments please and thank you! :)

Joe it looks very good. Here are some ideas that I had that may help.

1. Remove the kid in the upper right hand corner and slide the two other kids up and over to the right.

2. I don't know the type of Asian writting that is, but maybe put it in red and outline it in white. You might even play around with a bevel on the text.

3. Slide the two adult fighter up and over to the left, if you can with that picture.

4. Maybe make the background a gradient black to dark grey instead of solid black.

I like the poster and these are only suggestions. Good job!

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback - the club asked for some changes after the last round of okays (of course). Bit annoyed since I spent some time cleaning up the masking on this one.

I was using the gradient tool but kept getting a mask instead, today I think I remembered how to use it, LOL. Will post the updated one when I'm done with it.

Mucho better. Perhaps change the title text to a different color than white? Might help it to stand out a little more.

Agree, it looks much better. I would not change the color of the title because you have a dark background. I would outline the lettering in a red or blue to match the color scheme.

Thanks guys, I added an outline to the text to make it pop more. I couldn't go too crazy as I needed it to be consistent with the t-shirts that are being made up.

This is coming along nicely... Couple of suggestions though...

- little more breathing room on the edge... things are awfully close to the edges.
- enlist the help of a designer for your type design. It's a nice start but still lacks a little punch.

Thanks Craig, unfortunately can't do anything with the fonts as they match what's been sent to the printer for the t-shirts.

From memory it's 11 x 17 inches and I think I used a preset in Photoshop.

When you create a new canvas there are a bunch of US and International sizes for paper that you can select.

Graduated background and colour look MUCH better. Looks very professionally put together. Go with that.

Thanks Wayne, my biggest challenge was the masking since I manually did it using the paintbrush tool. I need to read up on quick masking techniques! :)
