Just got a Metz 50 AF-1 to go with my 430EX II that I use off camera with the ST-E2.

95% of the time I will have the 430EX in manual mode and everything is grand.

With the Metz, I can seem to trigger it in SL (slave) mode but only with the Metz in ETTL mode. If I want to use the Metz in manual mode I have to put it in Servo mode. The problem here seems to be that the ST-E2 wont trigger it, but 430EX is supposed to trigger it. But in Servo mode the Metz ignores the first flash and waits for a second flash? (It thinks any first flash is a preflash I think), so it is ignoring the 430EX flash.

I've read though the manual and messed around with them. Anybody else have this combo and have both flashes working off camera with the ST-E2?

P.S.
Thinking back on the testing I did earlier, with the 430EX in manual and the Metz in Servo (manual, optical slave) , I'm thinking only the Metz flash showed up in the photo, which doesn't make any sense at all? Ignore this bit for a while and I will double check.

I have never worked with a Metz flash, but with Canon flashes you have to start with your slaves in eTTL mode and after they establish communication with the master, you change their mode to manual via the master flash. I would think that the Metz would operate the same way.

But the ST-E2 doesn't support changing the flashes over to manual mode. It takes something like a 580 EX II to support that, when it's a master.

Okay. Another reason not to waste money on an ST-E2. :)

Figured it out. Well kinda. When I was testing then I just had them next to each other on light stands, about a foot apart and had the problems.

Tested them again but with one in a softbox and the other about 6 feet away on a stand and they worked perfectly, both in manual mode.

If I remember I'll try it again and put them closer and try recreate the problem again. It's a strange one alright
