I have been feeling somewhat uninspired shooting my normal model and portrait pictures, so I decided to mix things up a bit. A few weeks ago it was cityscapes and the week after that it was fire dancers.

We have been socked in with overcast and fog for a good part of the past couple of weeks, so after days of searching for something interesting to shoot, ended up at the local skate park.

I shot for about an hour and a half over the course of a couple of evenings and mostly used the time to introduce myself, get to know the guys a bit, and to take a few pics to figure out how to shoot them best.

I used my 580exii, on camera, in all the pics. It was convenient for this first shoot, but I may be looking into getting it off camera for future shoots.

Here is what we got.

Thanks,

No the flash didn't bother them one bit (I asked:)).

It was fairly light (yet overcast) and I was shooting high ISO, so the flash output was really low (like 1/16 to 1/32 power).

Great work with the flash!! I still can't figure out a flash. It's either blown out or totally dark. One of these days, one of these days...

I use manual exposure, so I get a consistant output from the flash. If I were to use ETTL there would be output variation between the images due to differences in framing and the differences in framing affecting the ETTL output.

Onother tip would be to use a longer lens so you dont get a situation where there is an area really close to the camera that is getting a lot of light.

Thanks for the comment.

Some of the photos are cropped a wee bit too tight. 1, 2, 4, and 7 to be exact. When shooting skating you ALWAYS want to be able to see where they're coming from and also where they're landing. Other than that the photos look great! Good job.

Also 1 and 3 are good because when they're doing a flip trick you want to make sure get the photo RIGHT before they catch their board. It helps show their style instead like in 2 and 4 when they are mid trick.
