It really is hard to get a good focused picture of my son with the nifty fifty since as soon as i have it focused on his eyes, he's moving....but this shot he was still and i have it focused on one eye, but the other eye is slightly blurry.
whats a photographer to do?
and also, if theres nothing you can do about that with this type of lense, which eye should i try to get in focus, the one closest to me?

You might have to let it back a little when shooting at an angle like that... try it at 2 maybe:)

i feel dumb, but to be honest, i have no idea what you mean. i'm trying to learn as much as i can and this forum really helps, but sometimes the "lingo" gets away from me.
what does "try it at two" mean??

at 1.8 the camera is wide open meaning the aperature... which makes for a very small depth of field. By raising it you get a larger depth of field. Here is a link to an article that explains it pretty well I think

He means try the aperature at an f number of 2.0 or even a little higher like 2.2

Don't feel embarrassed...its a great hobby and that shot is very close to being excellent...

Cheers,

sorry to say that this is typical performance with this lens. In fact this seems to be the case wide open and even at higher f numbers on alot of these. Focus tends to be just hit or miss. some copies can be mainly miss.

I think you might have a couple of things working against you. The shallow depth of field caused by the f1.8 and the 1/30 shutter speed. I'm sure your son is a moving target. 1/30 might not work. And that leads to the simple need for more light.

If the subject is REALLY close you're going to need to go down a few stops to get his whole face in focus. Try an aperture setting of f/4 perhaps. The offside is that you'll have to increase your ISO setting to offset the slower light capturing if you want the same shutter speed.

That's my first lens right there, and up until tonight when I accidentally ended up flooding the damned thing with dust, I couldn't have been happier with it. The Tamron 90mm Macro is going to give me HELL, in that respect, when it gets here...I can already tell. Maybe I can invent a special "dust-sock."
