I want to shoot tethered. I have never done so before. I have researched, and I understand most of the software issues and concepts, but not sure about hardware. What device is best used for shooting tethered? I have the following:

  • Ipad (first generation I believe)
  • Kindle Fire HD
  • Macbook Pro

Which of these is best? I am assuming it is the Macbook. It is fairly old, however, and I am not sure off the top of my head if the Canon EOS Utility will run on a Mac. Probably, just not sure without looking at it.

Assuming the Macbook is the best of the three, and assuming the software that came with my 60D will operate on a Mac, what type of cable do I need to connect the two? Is there some sort of cable 'extender' that will couple with the cord that was included with the camera and then connects to the laptop on the other end? I'd like something about 20' long or so.

I realize this is probably an elementary question, but you guys are my first resource due to the scope of knowledge contained herein. Thanks in advance for your help.

Canon supplies Mac versions of their utility programs with new cameras. Install those programs and that will allow tethered shooting with the Macbook. Do remember to turn off the camera's power management, so the camera does not automatically switch itself off. You'd need to search for a third-party USB cable to allow a long cable run.

Ur mac would be the easiest.
The Kindle fire might work but might not work but you would need to root it, then put CM9 on there and buy a USB host cable and buy an app.
Ipad might work. You would need the USB adapter and an app but I'm not too sure on that.

Thanks guys. I will get the software running tonight and look for the cable this weekend. Thanks for the thoughts. I figured this was an easy one, but thanks for confirming.

Here is a 16' cable. http://www.amazon.com …ctive+usb+extension+cable (external link)

I just bought a 60' cable from Amazon but it only worked the first 2 times that I tried it. It worked great at first but it wouldn't work today. http://www.amazon.com …ef=oh_details_o00_s00_i00 (external link)

If I can't get it figured out pretty quick, I'll be sending it back.
