What a wonderful set, Kenn. Simply incredible what you and Temple manage to do with that camera. I was wondering, how's the noise on higher iso's?
Hi Levina,
In truth we've not shot the SX50 much at higher ISOs so far, and only as JPEG. Here's one from Temple taken ISO400 1/125 1200mm @25ft:
And here's one I took at ISO500 1/125 1200mm @20ft:
I did post this
"Real-world ISO Ladder"
on the DPR site awhile back which shows a series of songbirds shot with ISO1600 thru ISO100:

(These were with the SX40, which uses the same sensor and processor as the SX50). The JPEG engine gradually sacrifices detail and saturation at higher ISOs, but can often still render usable images with well-controlled noise imo. We have to remember the size of the tiny sensors used in these superzooms. Their performance is remarkable, but they simply cannot match the APS-C or larger chips used in DSLRs for either noise or dynamic range.
Our advice to DSLR shooters who want to try these long-lens mighty-mites, would be to shoot them at the lowest possible ISO with wide-open apertures... and just forget what you've come to believe about necessary shutter speeds at long focal lengths and image stabilization (camera shake). We hand-hold the SX50 @1200mm with 1/100, every day...
All ya really gotta do is tell the birds not to move.

Hope this helps,
Kenn
