Hi guys! I have been shooting for just under 3 years. I plan on making the jump to newborn photography. Can any of you guys point me in the right direction? Atm I have a 5d mark II, 50 1.4 and 85 1.4. What type of lightning do yall recommend? strobes or speed lights off camera etc? Thanks in advance

Plenty of natural lighting shots in here via reflectors. All you need is a good window. After taking shots of my own I can tell you its hard work. It's not as easy as you would think, baby doesn't want to play and cries every time you try to pose them. Parents pay for perfect shots, not always easy to get. Lots of tissues are a must if you get my drift..........

I've found that speedlights just don't have the recycling time that I need if I'm shooting into a big octa. Especially for newborns.
My go to lights are mono lights. I use 3 Flashpoint 620 mono's.
However,I took this one yesterday using only 1 580 exii into a small umbrella. The results were pretty good

I should've added that this was taken with a 70-200. Don't remember the aperture.

Natural light is best for newborn photography. Canon 5dII and 50 1.4 lens is what you need.
Get ready to spend 2-4 hours for a newborn session. It takes time to perfect each pose and it really depends on the baby.

That's a pretty broad statement. One I don't necessarily agree with, what is BEST is what the situation or the photographer calls for to make their image.

It depends on what you like but for me and many newborn photographers natural light plus a reflector is the preferred method. I have both soft boxes and an octabox but I have never used a strobe on a newborn althoughI am thinking of getting a litepad for those situations where you have no choice. They work better than strobes for this sort of thing in my opinion.
